MOHID Studio

Introduction

MOHID Studio is a graphical user interface for the MOHID Water Modelling System. With MOHID Studio you can use MOHID Numerical Engines from inside a user friendly environment, managing all tasks required in order to prepare, execute and analyze results of numerical simulations done by MOHID Numerical Engines.

Features

MOHID Studio is an integrated system which permits to manage and edit data files, create and launch simulations and analyze model results. Map data can be displayed through an integrated GIS system and time series data can be displayed in an integrated graph visualization engine. A set of tools allows the user to create and preprocess MOHID data files. A special module allows managing data from field campaigns and/or automatic stations. MOHID Studio also offers the possibility to convert data among a set of common formats and MOHID internal formats. All features of MOHID Studio are described along this user guide.

Backward compatibility

MOHID Studio replaces the existing MOHID graphical user interfaces, namely MOHID GUI, MOHID GIS, MOHID Time Series Editor and MOHID Post Processor.

Backward compatibility allows importing projects created with MOHID GUI. Some formats of MOHID ASCII files (points, lines and polygons) have been replaced by a new generic geometry format, XML based. MOHID Studio Tools allows convert from one format to another[1].

Concepts behind MOHID Studio

MOHID Studio uses a database to store all information about projects and data from field campaigns and/or automatic stations. Data and result files from numerical models are stores in a well-defined directory structure.

Starting MOHID Studio

The MOHID Studio main windows and menus are presented first just to get the user confortable with the new software.

Then each menu and detailed description is linked to other subsections (pages) to make it easier to browse ans follow.

Hint:
Is suggested to the user to read this User Guide first (till the end to be used to MOHID Studio structure and windows)
and then use the Quick start guides to explore MOHID models, open and learn to create new MOHID Water and MOHID Land projects.

To execute MOHID Studio,

  • in operating systems prior to Windows 8 click on the Start button, go the Action Modulers folder, then open MOHID Studio folder and press MOHID Studio (steps represented on Figure 1).
  • in Windows 8 clik the Start button, and in Start menu go to MOHID Studio icon (Figure 2). If the MOHID Studio icon does not appear in Start Menu need to click on the down arrow and go to the "Apps" menu and add MOHID Studio to the Start menu by right-clicking it and selecting "Pint to Start" (represented in Figure 3).
  • in Windows 10 clik the Start button, and in Start menu go to MOHID Studio icon (Figure 4). If the MOHID Studio icon does not appear in Start Menu need to click on the bottom left icon to go to " All Apps" menu and go to "Action Modulers" -> "MOHID Studio" and right-clicking it and selecting "Pint to Start".

Start Page

The first image appearing after MOHID Studio is started is the "Startup" tab presented in Figure 5. This tab has the main options to start using Studio in a straightforward way:

  • choosing from a saved workspace (empty on first use) or create a new empty workspace.
  • open files to represent on GIS Map or time series.

On the left part of the tab is show the "Recent Workspaces" area where the last workspaces used are listed (in MOHID Studio first use this list is empty). If clicked the workspace will open.

The user may choose "Start with an empty workspace" or "Load and existing workspace" and select one of the saved workspaces (empty on MOHID Studio first use).

On the middle part of the "Startup" tab is swown the "Recent Files" area where the last opened files are listed ((in MOHID Studio first use this list is empty). If clicked the files will open.

If the desired files are not listed the user can find on top of this section two icons to open files that can be processed in GIS engine (points, lines, polygons, shapes, etc) represented in Figure 7 or open time series files (a browse window is shown to look for time series in MOHID format).

On the right part of the "Startup" tab is shown the "Samples" area where listed are MOHID Studio solutions and files that when clicked can be open. This files are in Action Modulers servers and can be updated continuously with new files.

Main Window

MOHID Studio’s main window is shown in Figure 8. On the top of the main window is placed the main menu. Inside the client area different dockable windows or tabs are located. The "Explorer" window or tab (currently shown in Figure 8) allows managing simulations and the "Map" window or tab (hidden in Figure 8) shows the content of the GIS engine.

Beside the "Explorer" window and the "Map" window (that are always open) other windows may appear in the client area of the main window (for example: XY Graphs, Tools, Reports, Startup, etc.).

Main Menu

The main menu is divided into several tabs and organized by features (and works in a similar way as the ribbon’s menu of Microsoft Office 2007 and above). Each tab contains a ribbon menu, organized in groups, with several items for a specific task. As an example the Figure 9 shows the ribbon menu related to the Map window. Each menu is explained in detail in this guide.

Getting Started with MOHID Studio

The best way to start working with MOHID Studio is to load a sample solution. On the "Start" tab or window or pressing button "Start", from menu Home (see Figure 6), there are two sample solutions (one for MOHID Water in Tagus Estuary and one for MOHID Land in Trancão watershed that is a tributary to Tagus estuary). These solutions are the same present in Quick start guides to start exploring MOHID Studio simulations with MOHID model.

Each solution contains one or more domains[2]. MOHID Studio domains are always represented by a color corresponding to the type of model, for an easy way to work. The color blue stands for MOHID Water domains, the color yellow stands for MOHID Land domains and the color red stands for MOHID River domains (as shown in Figure 10).

Hint:
Is suggested to the user to read this User Guide first (till the end to be used to MOHID Studio structure and windows)
and then use the Quick start guides to explore MOHID models, open and learn to create new MOHID Water and MOHID Land projects.

MOHID Studio help can always be found in this user guide, in MOHID Studio tutorials, on internet forums or by e-mail. It is possible to export your solution and then send and request for professional help (to see how to export solution check Project Management) through the option "Request Support".
